Maja Grykat e Hapëta, Mountain summit in Bjeshkët e Namuna, Albania

Maja Grykat e Hapëta is the highest summit of the Grykat e Hapëta massif, reaching 2,625 m in the Zhaborret ridgeline of the Accursed Mountains, within Tropojë municipality. The massif lies between the upper Valbona Valley to the north and the Nikaj Valley to the south, and continues west along the ridgeline to the Droçë pass. Built of Triassic limestone and dolomite, it has the shape of a conical trunk with very steep slopes and cliffs 700–800 m deep; four other peaks above 2,400 m rise around its core, and the massif is mostly bare of vegetation.

This mountain was documented during expeditions in the mid-20th century by an Albanian mountaineer who mapped the region. The survey work helped establish geographical knowledge of these highlands.

Local communities across different valleys refer to this peak by distinct names rooted in their geographic location and dialect. These varied names show how mountain people maintain their own relationship with the land they live near.

You can access this peak from several towns in the area, each offering different routes and approaches. Good hiking gear and mountain experience are essential for attempting the climb.

The summit has two local names recorded by mountaineer Aleksandër Bojaxhi on expeditions between 1962 and 1979: Valbona residents call it Maja e Madhe, while people in Curraj i Epërm call it Maja e Lugbatit. The name now printed on maps is a later adaptation. Four other peaks above 2,400 m rise around the massif's core.
