Thethi National Park, National park in Shkodër County, Albania
Thethi National Park stretches across the Albanian Alps with deep valleys, dense forests, limestone cliffs, and mountain peaks rising above 2,000 meters (6,500 feet). The terrain is rugged and crossed by several passes that connect different sections of the protected area.
The area received protected status in 1966 to safeguard the mountain ecosystems of the region. This was a turning point for Albanian environmental conservation and led to the designation of other mountain areas as well.
The mountain villages within the park preserve traditional Albanian highland ways, with distinctive stone houses and shepherding communities that continue their ancestral practices.
The park is best explored on foot, with several hiking trails connecting different valleys and passes. The best time to visit is between May and October, when the trails are passable and weather is more stable.
The park is home to rare animals such as the Balkan lynx and features the spectacular Grunas Canyon with distinctive karst formations. These geological features make the area a special window into the mountain landscape of the region.
