Albanian Alps National Park, National park in Shkodër and Kukës Counties, Albania.
Albanian Alps National Park is a mountain range in northern Albania with limestone peaks, glacial valleys, and thick forests spread across more than 8,800 hectares. The terrain features steep rocky formations and wild gorges carved from the stone over thousands of years.
The park was created in 2022 by combining three separate protected territories that existed before. Two of these areas had been safeguarded since the 1960s and 1990s, while a third reserve was integrated into the unified park.
Local mountain communities practice traditional shepherding across the park territories, using methods passed down for generations in these alpine settings. Visitors see evidence of this lifestyle in the landscape and daily rhythms of the region.
Visiting works best from May to October when trails are accessible and weather is most reliable for outdoor activities. Koplik city serves as the main starting point, with minibuses available to carry visitors to different trailheads and base areas.
Grunas Canyon is one of the deepest limestone gorges in the Balkans, showing rock formations shaped by millions of years of natural forces. The canyon was carved out by water processes that hollowed the stone over geological time.
