Музей кустарных изделий, Folk crafts museum in Presnensky District, Russia

The folk crafts museum in Presnensky District is an institution dedicated to Russian handmade arts and traditional regional making. The structure displays Russian-Byzantine architectural elements with intricate wooden carvings and decorative patterns throughout its exterior design.

The museum grew from exhibits displayed at the 1882 All-Russian Trade and Industry Exhibition and was formally established on May 9, 1885. It operated as a center for preserving and documenting craft techniques from across the country for over a century.

The museum exhibits traditional crafts from across Russia, showcasing woodwork, textiles, pottery, and folk items that reflect the artistic practices of different regions. Visitors encounter the living heritage of these regional making traditions preserved through displays and workshop demonstrations.

The site includes workshop spaces, exhibition areas, and display sections where visitors can observe traditional making methods in action. Plan for several hours to properly explore the various craft collections and working areas throughout the institution.

The original Russian matryoshka doll was created in this museum's workshop, with artist Sergey Malyutin painting the first design. This invention emerged from seeing Japanese nesting figures and became one of the most recognizable Russian craft objects worldwide.
