Yatsushiro Plain, Agricultural alluvial plain in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.

The Yatsushiro Plain is a flat expanse in Kumamoto Prefecture shaped by river deposits that created fertile soils. The entire area is dominated by rice fields and farmland that stretch to the horizon.

The plain was systematically expanded through large-scale land reclamation during the Edo period and transformed into a major farming region. These drainage and cultivation projects laid the groundwork for the intensive agriculture practiced here today.

The plain has long been the heart of farming in this region, with rice fields shaping the landscape as far as the eye can see. The way people work these fields follows customs that have defined the community for generations.

Visitors can reach the plain by train or car from Kumamoto, with the best time to visit during the growing season in spring and summer. Guided tours are available to explore local farming practices and understand how the land is cultivated.

The area is known for growing banpeiyu citrus and karashi renkon, a spicy lotus root dish prepared with mustard. These specialized products are rooted in local tradition and show how farmers have adapted to use the regional resources.
