The two-story brick building features classical architectural elements designed by Jacopo Sansovino, incorporating Roman basilica layouts within Venetian structure traditions.
Construction began in 1532 to replace the old school building, yet the project faced numerous delays before its final inauguration in 1583.
The institution served as headquarters for one of Venice's major social organizations, supporting hospitals and providing assistance to community members in need.
The building opens Wednesday through Monday from 10:00 to 18:00, hosting contemporary art exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year.
The structure maintained its original brick exterior instead of receiving the marble or stone facade treatment common to other Venetian institutional buildings.
