Scuola nuova di Santa Maria della Misericordia, Renaissance charitable institution in Cannaregio, Venice, Italy.
The Scuola Nuova di Santa Maria della Misericordia is a two-story brick building in Cannaregio designed by Jacopo Sansovino with classical architectural features. The structure combines Roman basilica layouts with Venetian building traditions and displays a functional, straightforward design approach.
Construction started in 1532 to replace an earlier school building, but the project encountered significant delays before completion. The building was finally inaugurated in 1583 and became an established institutional presence in Venice.
The school was a hub where Venetians gathered to support those in need through organized charitable work. Today, visitors can see the spaces that once facilitated community gatherings and mutual aid efforts.
The building is easily accessible on foot in the Cannaregio neighborhood and presents itself as an open structure welcoming visitors to explore. Keep in mind that interior spaces include stairs and contemporary exhibitions rotate seasonally.
The building kept its original brick exterior while many other Venetian institutions received marble or stone coverings. This choice reflects the organization's practical and focused character.
