Chen's Ancestral Temple, Ancestral temple in Ningbo, China.
Chen's Ancestral Temple is a family shrine in Ningbo with 19 buildings arranged symmetrically around a central core. Nine halls and six courtyards form the main structure, with spaces aligned along a north-south axis.
The temple was founded during the Qing Dynasty when Chen family members from many regions pooled resources to build it. The project finished in 1894, marking a period of wider family unity and shared effort.
The temple is named for the Chen clan whose members came from many regions. The hand-carved wooden details, ceramic ornaments, and painted wall scenes show stories from history and folk life that honor this extended family network.
The temple operates today as a cultural museum with exhibitions showing regional folk art, traditional crafts, and the history of ancestor veneration. Visitors can explore the spaces at their own pace while discovering the different halls and courtyards.
At the entrance stand impressive stone drums more than 2.5 meters tall, accompanied by equally tall painted doors. These guardian figures and drums mark the arrival point and create a striking first impression of this sacred space.
