Parish Church of St Mary

The Parish Church of St Mary stands as a medieval building with flint and ironstone walls, decorated stonework, and a timber bell-cote topped by a pyramidical roof on its west end. The structure is protected as a Grade II listed building and retains its historic character throughout.

The building originated in the late 12th century and rests on Saxon foundations, anchoring it deep in the region's past. Major repairs took place in the 15th century, particularly the replacement of its roof.

The church shifted from being the main parish building to a secondary chapel in 1967 when St Michael's took over as the primary church for the community. This change in role remains visible in how the space functions today.

Inside the church rests a carved stone effigy of Sir Richard de Montfichet on a window sill, a rare survivor from medieval times. Local tradition holds that his heart was buried beneath the church floor, creating an intimate connection between this place and a medieval figure.
