Hitchin Flyover, Railway bridge in Hertfordshire, England
The Hitchin Flyover is a railway viaduct in Hertfordshire that spans 800 meters and carries the Cambridge line over the East Coast Main Line. The structure uses 22 steel-reinforced spans to support the single-track railway.
The viaduct opened on 26 June 2013 after decades of planning and successful public inquiry approval in May 2010. The project solved a long-standing problem at ground-level railway crossings.
The embankment sides of this railway structure became known as Poppy Bank when red flowers naturally grew along its chalk-based slopes.
The best view of the structure comes from ground level when trains pass overhead, showing how the track is elevated above the main corridor. Convenient public access points sit at both ends of the flyover for pedestrians.
Construction teams worked during night hours to build the structure over active railway tracks, installing specialized safety barriers to protect workers. This nighttime approach allowed daytime train services to continue without interruption.
