Statue of George IV, Bronze Royal statue near Pavilion Gardens, Brighton, England
This bronze statue of King George IV stands on a granite pedestal near the North Gate of Pavilion Gardens, rising about 9 feet (2.7 m) in height. The sculpture depicts the king in formal dress, serving as a focal point in this key garden space.
Sculptor Francis Legatt Chantrey created this bronze work in 1828 to replace an earlier damaged plaster version by Rossi from 1802. The monument has been maintained as an important public memorial since its installation.
This monument reflects Brighton's transformation into a royal resort under the king's patronage and his personal love for the town. The statue's presence near the Pavilion shows how deeply his reign shaped the character of the place.
The statue sits just outside the Pavilion Gardens and is easy to reach on foot from the main attractions in the area. It makes a useful reference point when navigating the gardens and surrounding spaces.
The sculptor Chantrey paid the extra costs from his own pocket when the project expenses doubled beyond the original fee. This generous act reflects his personal commitment to the work's quality and the city's honor.
