Grange Over Sands Lido, Art Deco lido in Grange-over-Sands, England.
Grange Over Sands Lido is a concrete swimming complex with a 50-meter pool, a five-stage diving platform, and a two-story entrance building containing changing facilities. Supporting brick structures feature concrete accents and slated roofs, along with a pump house that filtered seawater at high tide.
The facility opened in 1932 as seaside bathing became increasingly popular along British coasts. It operated without interruption until closing in 1993, marking the end of its long history as a public recreation venue.
The site reflects how people spent leisure time by the seaside in the 1930s and the importance they placed on public swimming facilities. It shows the lifestyle and design choices of that era for British coastal recreation.
The site is easy to navigate and offers enough space to explore the different areas and levels. Visitors should keep in mind that this is an older structure, so some areas may have limited accessibility.
The pool features an unusual mushroom-shaped cross-section, which is rare in British bathing facilities of that period. All original 1930s elements including the stepped diving stage remain intact, revealing the craftsmanship of that era.
