Penny Lane, Street in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, UK

Penny Lane is a street in the south of Liverpool, running through the suburb of Mossley Hill. Its most visited point is a roundabout at the junction of Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, where a barbershop, a fire station, and an old bus shelter can all still be found.

The name Penny Lane has appeared on Liverpool maps for over 200 years, possibly coming from a one-penny toll charged on a turnpike road. By the early 20th century, the roundabout had become a key hub for buses and trams crossing the city.

The street is known for its name painted directly onto building walls, because the signs were stolen by fans so often that the city stopped replacing metal ones. The old bus shelter near the roundabout has been turned into a small café with Beatles memorabilia inside.

The street is easy to reach by bus from the city center, with the stop near the roundabout being the best starting point for a visit. Visitors can also combine Penny Lane with a walk to other nearby Beatles sites, including the childhood homes of McCartney and Lennon and Strawberry Field.

A street sign stolen in 1977 by some students was returned to Liverpool in 2023, nearly 47 years later, and is now on display at The Beatles Story museum near the docks. It is thought to be one of the oldest stolen signs ever to come back to the city.
