Barnweill,homestead moat

Barnweill, homestead moat, architectural structure in South Ayrshire, Scotland, UK

Barnweill is a moated medieval site in Craigie, South Ayrshire, protected as a scheduled monument. A rectangular mound about 82 feet by 39 feet (25 by 12 meters) is surrounded on three sides by a well-defined ditch, with the fourth side sloping into natural ground.

The site developed in medieval times as a fortified dwelling, likely under the Lindsay family's control as they held significant land in the region. Over centuries, the structures fell into disrepair and were eventually abandoned, though the earthworks remained visible.

The name Barnweill reflects its role as a fortified medieval residence tied to the Lindsay family's estates in the region. The earthworks and moat visible today show how the land was deliberately shaped for defense and dwelling.

The site sits on steep terrain with good views across the surrounding land and is best explored on foot. The rural setting means you should expect uneven ground and changing weather conditions.

Aerial photographs taken decades ago reveal the long ditches and surrounding land, helping reveal how the site was constructed and used. These historical images show details that are difficult to see from ground level.
