HMS Gannet SAR Flight, Naval search and rescue station in South Ayrshire, Scotland
HMS Gannet SAR Flight was a Royal Navy search and rescue unit based at Prestwick Airport in South Ayrshire, operating helicopters for emergency missions over land and sea. The unit covered a large part of Scotland and the surrounding waters, responding to incidents around the clock.
The station was founded in 1971 as RNAS Prestwick and over time grew into one of the Royal Navy's key rescue bases in Scotland. In 2016, after 45 years of service, its operations were handed over to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
The station received the Wilkinson Sword of Peace in 1998, an award given to military units that serve civilian communities in meaningful ways. This recognition reflected how deeply the crews were appreciated by people living along the Scottish coast and islands.
The base was located within the grounds of a working airport, so access to the operational areas is generally restricted to the public. It is worth checking in advance whether any open days or viewing opportunities are available before making the trip.
In 2009, the unit recorded one of its highest ever numbers of call-outs in a single year, making it one of the busiest rescue bases in Britain at that time. Much of this activity was driven by the demanding conditions of the Scottish coastline and the surrounding mountain terrain.
