Stowe Park and Garden, Landscape garden in Buckinghamshire, England
Stowe Park and Garden is a large English country estate near Buckingham that rolls across open valleys and gentle slopes. Narrow lakes and winding waterways thread through the property, while stone structures and columned pavilions stand scattered among grass meadows and groves of trees.
The Temple family began reshaping the estate in the late 17th century and brought in different designers to work on the land. The final form emerged by the mid-18th century through successive interventions by several architects and landscape planners.
The temples and monuments within the garden represent different architectural styles, from Palladian to Gothic, reflecting the changing tastes of 18th-century England.
The National Trust manages the grounds and keeps them open daily for visitors, with car parking and a café available. A full walk takes several hours, as the paths stretch over long distances.
More than 40 protected structures of the highest category stand scattered across the grounds, including a stone arched bridge and a Corinthian triumphal arch. This concentration makes the garden one of the most legally safeguarded landscape sites in the country.
