Arley House and Gardens

Arley House and Gardens, Grade II listed garden in Upper Arley, England

Arley House and Gardens is a country estate in Wyre Forest featuring extensive grounds that combine ornamental gardens, woodland, and open parkland across approximately 35 hectares. The property includes four distinct garden compartments, a notable magnolia collection, and an arboretum containing more than 300 tree species.

The estate belonged to the Lyttelton family from the mid-1400s until 1779, when it passed to Lucy, sister of Thomas Lyttelton. This transfer marked a turning point in how the property was developed and shaped.

The gardens reflect different design styles developed over the decades, showing how people translated their ideas about beauty into the landscape. You can see how older formal arrangements meet newer designs, with various periods existing side by side.

The estate is best explored on foot, with pathways connecting the various garden areas and woodland. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear and allow time to explore, as seeing the full grounds can take several hours.

The arboretum features a 65-meter laburnum arch, one of the longest of its kind in Britain, created to form a natural tunnel of flowers. This impressive botanical structure took many years to cultivate and remains a striking feature when in bloom.
