Vijaygad Fort, Coastal fort in Ratnagiri district, India
Vijaygad Fort is a fortified structure on the northern bank of the Shastri River, protected by deep ditches on three sides and separated from surrounding land by defensive barriers. The site contains remnants of walls, bastions, and internal structures that show how it was organized for defense and habitation.
The fort was built as part of a coastal defense network to control maritime trade and landings along the western shore. By the 1800s, it had lost its military importance and fell into decline as record-keeping became irregular.
The fort exemplifies the military architectural traditions of Maharashtra, featuring fortification elements characteristic of coastal defense structures.
You can reach the fort by road from the village of Tavsal, where the path is clear and manageable for most visitors. Once there, you will need about 15 minutes to walk around the main structures and explore the grounds.
The fort is part of a linked defensive system with Jaigad Fort and other structures positioned to guard the coastline together. Visitors often miss that these forts were meant to work as a coordinated network rather than as separate defensive points.
