Maruhachi Hyakkaten, Historical department store in Kutsuki, Japan
The three-story wooden building features a distinctive zigzag pattern that wraps around the second and third floors with slate roofing and decorative parapets.
Constructed in 1933 with an additional floor added in 1943, Maruhachi Hyakkaten received recognition as a registered cultural property on June 12, 1997.
The department store reopened in 2023 as a retail space and cafe, offering local products and dishes that represent the regional traditions of Takashima City.
Located at 838 Kutsuki Ichiba, the store operates from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM with lunch service between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, except on Tuesdays.
The building combines its function as a commercial establishment with architectural elements from early modern Japan, maintaining a total area of 83 square meters.
