Unterwasserpfad Île aux Canards, Underwater trail in Noumea, New Caledonia.
Unterwasserpfad Île aux Canards is a snorkeling trail off Noumea's coast featuring five marked zones between 2 and 7 meters deep. Buoys mark each area and diving equipment is available to rent on the island.
The trail was created in 2001 through partnership between marine biologist Sebastien Faninoz and an environmental education center. It was designed to support coral reef protection and raise awareness about ocean conservation.
Educational signs placed underwater explain how marine life coexists in this part of the ocean, showing connections you can watch firsthand while snorkeling. You see firsthand how fish and coral depend on each other to survive.
Small boats depart from Vata Cove to transport visitors to the starting point. Bring water shoes and sun protection as there is little shade along the route.
Volunteers regularly patrol to protect branching coral formations and guide visitors through the zones. These efforts have helped preserve sensitive coral structures in designated areas over many years.
