Bibliothèque Bernheim

Bibliothèque Bernheim is a public library in Noumea housed in a colonial-era metal-framed structure composed of two connected buildings. The facility contains multiple reading rooms, administrative spaces, and a dedicated music collection.

The building was originally created as New Caledonia's pavilion for the 1900 Paris World's Fair and later relocated to Noumea. It was reconstructed between 1901 and 1904 and has since served as a cultural institution for the city.

The library serves as a repository for knowledge about New Caledonia and Pacific cultures. Visitors can explore materials that document local traditions and stories spanning generations.

The library sits on Avenue du Maréchal-Foch in a convenient downtown location. A mobile service extends access to remote villages and communities that lack permanent facilities.

The metal framework was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the engineer behind the Eiffel Tower. This early 20th-century engineering solution demonstrates how advanced construction techniques traveled from Europe to the Pacific.
