House of Auguste de Montferrand
House of Auguste de Montferrand, Architectural landmark at Moika River Embankment 86-88, Saint Petersburg, Russia
The House of Auguste de Montferrand is a neoclassical building located at Moika River Embankment 86-88 in Saint Petersburg. Its left facade features a distinctive lantern-shaped balcony, and today only the left section of the original structure remains as part of a larger complex.
French architect Auguste de Montferrand purchased this residence in the 1820s while overseeing construction of Saint Isaac's Cathedral. He maintained ownership until 1858, making it his home during one of the city's most significant building projects of that era.
The house reflects the tastes of 19th-century wealthy residents through its ornate rooms and halls that display how a prominent architect lived. The decorated ceilings, carved furnishings, and fireplaces show the style and comfort that came with professional success during that period.
The left wing displays the original structure most clearly, as the rest of the building underwent later modifications. Visitors can best appreciate the facade and architectural details from the embankment side facing the river.
While Montferrand lived there, the courtyard housed a private museum displaying his personal collection of classical artwork and architectural pieces. This private gallery was an unusual feature for a residential property and revealed the architect's deep passion for his profession.
