M/S Atene, Training vessel and working life museum in Skärhamn, Sweden.
M/S Atene is a sailing vessel and working life museum in Skärhamn that displays what life was like aboard commercial ships. The ship has a clipper bow built for speed, traditional rigging typical of sailing vessels from this era, and a compact superstructure design.
The ship was built in 1909 at a Danish shipyard and originally carried cargo between ports under a different name. It later came to Sweden where it was converted into a floating classroom to preserve maritime knowledge and traditions.
The vessel now serves as a floating classroom where visitors experience how sailors once worked and learned from one another at sea. The crew and participants share tasks and knowledge in the traditional way that maritime communities operated for generations.
The vessel is available from April through October and offers sailing trips in the surrounding waters. Visitors should expect to be active on deck and prepare for maritime weather conditions during their time aboard.
Every passenger becomes an active crew member during trips, helping with sails, navigation, and cooking in the galley. This hands-on participation turns each journey into real practical training in seamanship.
