Tjörn Municipality

Tjörn Municipality is a municipality in western Sweden comprising several islands and smaller islets surrounded by water. The area spans a large territory with extensive coastal zones and water surfaces throughout.

The current municipality was formed in 1952 when several separate municipal units on Tjörn and neighboring islands merged into one. The maritime heritage of the region extends back centuries and continues to shape local life today.

The Nordic Watercolour Museum in Skärhamn showcases work by local and international artists. The building has become a gathering place for people interested in contemporary visual arts.

The area is connected to the mainland by bridges making it easy to reach by car. Keep in mind that the population grows significantly during summer months when visitors arrive for water sports and sailing.

The name Tjörn comes from the region's ancient language and refers to the oldest and largest land mass in the area. This namesake island remains a central destination for visitors today with numerous harbors and small villages.
