Bunker Roche à Coucou, Scenic viewpoint near Les Pieux, Normandy, France
Roche à Coucou is a large sandstone rock perched on a cliff near Les Pieux, in the Manche department of Normandy. It sits above the Anse de Sciotot bay and faces west toward the open sea.
During World War Two, German observation structures were built at this site to monitor the western coastline. After the war, the area was returned to public use and the natural setting gradually took over again.
The Roche à Coucou sits within a stretch of open heathland covered with low shrubs and tall grasses. This type of coastal moorland is common across the Cotentin peninsula and gives the spot a raw, open character that is easy to notice.
The site is reached by marked trails from Les Pieux, passing through open moorland before arriving at the cliff top. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, and visitors should stay careful near the edge as there are no barriers.
On a clear day, the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Sark and Herm can be spotted from here on the western horizon. They appear as faint shapes but are visible to the naked eye, which surprises many visitors.
