Le Point Sublime, Scenic viewpoint in Saint-Georges-de-Lévéjac, France
Le Point Sublime is a scenic viewpoint on the Causse de Sauveterre plateau, in Saint-Georges-de-Lévéjac, southern France. It looks out over the Gorges du Tarn, where tall cliffs of red and orange limestone drop sharply down to the green water of the river below.
The Gorges du Tarn were carved over thousands of years by the river cutting through layers of limestone on the Causse plateaus. The viewpoint became known as travelers and painters began exploring this remote part of southern France during the 19th century.
The viewpoint is close to the village of Saint-Georges-de-Lévéjac and can be reached by car, with a short walk to the edge. Visiting on a clear day gives the best view of the cliffs and the river below.
From this spot, the Tarn river makes a near right-angle bend that is clearly visible from above, giving the water an unusual shape as it winds through the gorge. This curve makes the river look close at one moment and far away the next, depending on where you look.
