De SAS4-toren, Observation tower in Dessel, Belgium
De SAS4-toren is an observation tower in Dessel, Belgium. It stands 37 meters tall and has 216 steps leading to a viewing platform that offers views of the surrounding canals and landscape.
The tower was built to mark the unique crossing of three canals: Bocholt-Herentals, Dessel-Schoten, and Dessel-Kwaadmechelen. In September 2018, a memorial for World War II victims was inaugurated at the site.
At the base of the tower, a visitor center hosts a permanent exhibition that tells three stories: Dessel as a green tourism destination, the canal network managed by De Vlaamse Waterweg, and the local quartz sand extraction by Sibelco. The exhibition uses visual and audio displays to make the information engaging.
The tower is open all day, every day, and entry is free. For those who cannot climb the stairs, a visitor center at the base shows live camera views from the top on a screen.
The tower has been used as the setting for a DJ set by Franz Kano, which was recorded at the top and can be viewed online. Also, a 360° virtual tour allows people to experience the view from the top without climbing the stairs.
