Postel Abbey, Norbertine monastery in Mol, Belgium
Postel Abbey is a Norbertine monastery in Mol organized around a central rectangular courtyard. The church, dormitories, refectory, and administrative buildings form an enclosed complex constructed from brick and stone.
The monastery began in 1135 when monks from Floreffe Abbey established a religious settlement at this location. The community later became self-governing, achieving full abbey status by 1618.
The church here blends late Romanesque and Gothic styles, with the Gothic elements added during 17th-century renovations. Walking through the interior, you can easily spot where the older and newer architectural periods meet.
The grounds are open to visitors most days outside of religious services, and you can walk around freely or join a guided tour. Contact the Mol tourist office to check schedules and arrange group visits if needed.
The monastery has produced cheese since 1947, operating its own dairy farm to create the distinctive hard cheese known by the abbey's name. This product remains an active part of the community's work.
