Donjon des aigles, Bird sanctuary in Beaucens, France
Donjon des Aigles is a bird sanctuary housed within a medieval fortress in the Hautes-Pyrenees mountains, containing kites, vultures, eagles, falcons, buzzards, and colorful parrots. The facility displays various raptors and other bird species that serve both educational purposes and conservation programs.
The stone castle of Beaucens was built in the 11th century as a defensive fortress in the Pyrenees region. Over time, the historic structure was transformed into a facility dedicated to protecting and displaying threatened bird of prey populations.
The flying shows present traditional falconry practices and help visitors understand how birds of prey are protected in the Pyrenees region. These displays happen several times daily and draw people who want to learn more about conservation efforts.
The sanctuary is open from April through September with flight shows scheduled multiple times throughout the day for visitor convenience. Parking is readily available near the entrance, allowing visitors to plan their time around the demonstration schedule.
The birds fly freely over the audience displaying natural hunting and flying behavior framed by mountain peaks in the distance. Visitors get a rare chance to watch raptors at full speed and experience their aerial agility up close.
