The Twist, Art gallery and footbridge at Kistefos Museum, Norway
The Twist is an art gallery and footbridge at Kistefos Museum that spans 60 meters across the Randselva river. The building features an aluminum-clad exterior and three distinct exhibition spaces connected by a glass staircase between levels.
The building opened in 2019 on the grounds of a former pulp mill, transforming an industrial site into a modern architectural landmark. This conversion of abandoned factory land demonstrates how industrial areas can be given new cultural purpose.
The gallery shows rotating exhibitions of Norwegian and international artists across three separate spaces, each offering different views of the river landscape. Each exhibition area uses natural light differently and creates its own feel for experiencing the artworks.
Visitors enter through a south entrance accessed by a steel bridge leading to exhibition areas connected by stairs. The building sits outdoors within a park setting with river views, so good footwear is recommended, especially during wet weather.
The structure is made of straight aluminum panels and fir wood slats that create a continuous twisting effect, connecting the two riverbanks. This rotating design is uncommon in architecture and creates a visual illusion as you move around the building.
