Plateau des Gras, Protected natural area in Ardèche, France
The Plateau des Gras extends over 3,636 hectares between the Beaume and Chassezac gorges, featuring limestone formations at elevations between 230 and 250 meters.
The plateau contains numerous dolmens from the third millennium BCE, making it one of the areas with the highest concentration of megalithic structures in France.
Stone shelters called capitelles, built by farmers in the 19th century, remain on the plateau as testimonies of traditional agricultural practices.
The area offers hiking trails and cave exploration opportunities, with designated access points along departmental road D104 connecting various sections of the plateau.
The geological layers from Rhaetian to Kimmeridgian periods contain numerous fossil remains, particularly ammonite imprints in the Jurassic limestone.
