Hommage à Confucius, Public sculpture at Sciences University campus, Montpellier, France
Hommage à Confucius is a red steel and shotcrete sculpture on the Montpellier Sciences University campus, distinguished by its ring form topped with a cylindrical shape. The work rises 6 meters high and extends 8 meters in length.
The sculpture was commissioned in 2000 to mark the opening of Montpellier's first tramway line. It emerged as part of a broader urban renewal program that reshaped the campus and surrounding areas.
The artwork references the concept of Yin and Yang through its ring and cylindrical forms, representing the dual philosophy that Confucius explored. These contrasting geometric shapes create a visual expression that visitors can perceive directly.
The sculpture stands at a roundabout between Place Eugene Bataillon and Avenue Augustin Fliche, near the Université Sciences et Lettres tram stop. The location is easily accessible from the campus infrastructure and sits at a major traffic intersection.
Local residents have given the sculpture the informal nickname 'The Donut and Sausage,' reflecting its unusual form. This playful name is well known among people who regularly pass through the area.
