Nid d'Aigle, Mountain viewpoint in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, France.
Nid d'Aigle is a mountain viewpoint and railway station at 2,372 meters elevation in the Mont Blanc region. It sits where the railway line ends, serving as a stopping point for visitors traveling up from the valley below.
The railway station was established in 1913 as the highest rail terminus in France at that time. A fire destroyed the original refuge in 2002, but it was rebuilt in 2006 with modern features.
The station serves as a gateway for alpinists accessing Mont Blanc's normal route through Tête-Rousse refuge and Goûter refuge.
The rack railway operates regularly from June through September, reaching the station from the valley below. Winter service stops at a lower point due to avalanche dangers in the higher sections.
The rebuilt refuge incorporates solar panels and rainwater collection systems for sustainable operation. These features allow the facility to function with minimal environmental impact at this remote altitude.
