Zatrič, Medieval fortification in Orahovac Municipality, Kosovo.
Zatrič is a medieval fortification in Orahovac Municipality situated on a ridgeline at roughly 1,000 meters in elevation. The ruins span two main areas: a fortified core at the highest point and additional structures descending down the slope.
The fortress likely began as a Byzantine defensive structure and served multiple populations over centuries. Archaeological layers suggest occupation started around the 9th or 10th century and continued through the medieval period.
The site shows evidence of how different communities lived and worked together over centuries through the objects found during excavation. Pottery and brick fragments reveal the daily crafts and trade connections that sustained this place.
Reaching the site requires hiking over uneven terrain and steep sections that demand careful footing. Visitors should wear proper footwear and allow extra time to climb from the nearby village of Zatrić.
The southern and eastern sides of the site are protected by natural rock walls that drop steeply for dozens of meters. These natural barriers made the fortress difficult to approach and simple to defend from above.
