Jardins de la Poterie Hillen, Botanical garden in Thermes-Magnoac, France.
The Jardins de la Poterie Hillen spans 6 hectares with distinct areas including an Italian garden featuring fountains, an organic vegetable section, and an exotic area growing approximately 120 bamboo varieties. Throughout the grounds, handcrafted pottery pieces fired in wood ovens integrate traditional ceramics with the botanical landscape.
The gardens emerged in 1990 when Renate-Elisa and Lutz Hillen acquired an old Gascon farmhouse dating from the 18th century and redeveloped the surrounding land. This transformation converted an abandoned rural property into a space where botanical and craft traditions intersect.
The name reflects the region's pottery heritage, which remains visible through the handcrafted works integrated into the garden design. Visitors encounter local craft traditions blended with contemporary gardening practices throughout their walk.
The site opens from May through October for both independent exploration and guided walks led by gardening specialists. Wear comfortable shoes and prepare for varying weather conditions depending on the season and time of day.
The site preserves rare techniques of regional pottery production that visitors can explore through workshops and studio demonstrations. This blend of traditional craft and contemporary horticulture creates an unusual learning experience.
