Maze and labyrinth, Recreational gardens and hedge maze at Schönbrunn Palace, Austria
The maze at Schönbrunn consists of three separate hedge labyrinths covering more than 7,000 square meters (75,000 sq ft) total. The pathways guide you through tall green walls with different routes to explore and discover.
The original maze was created around 1720 as entertainment for the royal court, but it fell into disrepair over the centuries. A major reconstruction project in the 1990s restored it to its current form.
The pathways incorporate zodiac symbols that connect traditional garden design with astronomy in a way visitors can discover while walking. These signs show how the palace used knowledge about stars as part of its garden experience.
The maze is open from April through November with multiple difficulty levels for different visitors. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the paths have sandy or grassy surfaces that can become slippery when wet.
An ancient plane tree in the center supports a viewing platform where visitors can watch others navigating the green corridors from above. This elevated vantage point offers a completely different way to experience the maze than walking through it.
