Flower Tree, Contemporary sculpture in Place Antonin Poncet, Lyon, France
The Flower Tree is a contemporary steel sculpture featuring 85 oversized plastic blooms on Place Antonin Poncet in central Lyon. The structure rises to approximately 6 meters and creates a striking contrast with its organic forms against the urban surroundings.
The sculpture first appeared during the 2003 Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art and gained such public support that it became a permanent installation in 2007. This decision reflected how the community embraced the integration of this modern work into their public space.
The work represents a conversation between contemporary Asian artistic language and the classical European architecture surrounding the central square. Visitors notice how the modern forms contrast with historic buildings while existing in harmony with the urban environment.
The work sits on the eastern side of the square and is accessible year-round, most easily reached via the Bellecour metro stations on lines A and D. The plaza itself provides plenty of space to walk around and view the sculpture from multiple angles.
Each of the 85 blooms carries a polyester resin coating that preserves its color intensity through all weather conditions for years. This allows the work to remain vibrant and glowing despite constant exposure to the elements.
