Berges du Rhône, Riverbank in Lyon, France
The Berges du Rhône stretch across several kilometers along the river through six districts of Lyon, connecting two major parks with continuous pathways. The space features wide areas for walking and cycling, along with various zones designed for activities and rest by the water.
The riverbank was transformed in the early 2000s from an industrial zone into a public space after parking areas and old structures were removed. This change brought the river back to the center of the city's daily life.
The riverbank features public art that reflects how people in Lyon enjoy the waterside, and it has become a natural gathering place for residents from surrounding neighborhoods. Regular events here create opportunities for different communities to meet and spend time together throughout the seasons.
The continuous pathways make navigation straightforward and are easily accessible for both walkers and cyclists. Visitors should explore different sections at various times of day, as the light and activity along the water constantly shift.
Eight different quays line the left bank, each named after significant figures and places from French history. This naming connects the everyday waterside to important parts of the region's past.
