4th arrondissement of Lyon, Administrative district on Croix-Rousse hill, Lyon, France
The 4th arrondissement of Lyon is a municipal district on the Croix-Rousse hill, stretching between the Rhône and Saône rivers in northern Lyon. The area covers roughly 293 hectares and sits at an elevation of about 250 meters above the city center.
This district was created in 1852 when surrounding communes were annexed to Lyon and quickly became a center for silk manufacturing. Hundreds of workshops developed throughout the 19th century, making it a major industrial hub.
The neighborhood is known for its daily markets, especially the Croix-Rousse market and Saturday organic produce sales, which shape local life. These trading customs reflect the character and habits of residents today.
Two metro stations on line C, Croix-Rousse and Hénon, connect the district to central Lyon. Additional bus routes throughout the area provide convenient access to different neighborhoods.
The Gros Caillou, a granite boulder transported by glaciers from the Alps, was discovered during tunnel construction in 1861. This stone remains a local landmark and symbol of the district today.
