Place des Tapis

Place des Tapis is a pedestrian square in Lyon's 4th arrondissement, stretching between two major boulevards and lined with large plane trees that provide shade. The space features a fountain at its center, wide walkways, and open areas where people gather to rest or meet.

This square replaced a railway freight station that operated from the 1860s to the early 1900s. The transformation from a working industrial site to a public gathering space marked a significant change in how the neighborhood used its land.

The square's name refers to the silk weavers who settled this neighborhood centuries ago and shaped its identity. Today, public artworks and monuments on the square reflect this legacy of craftsmanship that still resonates with visitors.

The square is easily accessible via the nearby Croix-Rousse metro station and nearby bicycle rental stations. The open layout makes it easy to navigate, and multiple paths connect to surrounding streets and neighborhoods.

A mural on the edge of the square is repainted annually with fresh artwork, showcasing the neighborhood's creative energy. This changing canvas reflects how the area continues to evolve and express itself through street art.
