Schuman Bridge, Modern bridge across Saône River in Lyon, France
The Schuman Bridge spans the Saône River between Lyon's 4th and 9th districts, featuring two arches that curve below the deck at mid-span. Separate lanes accommodate vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, each with dedicated sidewalks for safe river crossing.
The bridge was designed following an international design competition in 2009 and completed in November 2014. It represents the 17th crossing over the Saône and links two historically significant districts.
The bridge is named after Robert Schuman, a founding figure in European unity, and stands within the UNESCO World Heritage area of Old Town Lyon.
The bridge provides wide paths for pedestrians and cyclists with clear separation from traffic, making crossings safe and easy to navigate. It works well to visit during the day to appreciate the architectural details and return in the evening to see the lighting effects.
The bridge uses triangular steel casings that create shifting visual patterns as light changes throughout the day. Ground-level lighting highlights its clean lines and gives it a refined appearance after dark.
