Parc Chazière, Public park in the 4th arrondissement of Lyon, France
Parc Chazière is a public park in the 4th arrondissement of Lyon, sitting on the western slope of the Croix Rousse hill. The grounds cover around 5 hectares and include open lawns, tree-lined paths, a belvedere with a view over the city, and a brick villa at its center.
The Villa Gillet was built in 1911 by a wealthy industrialist who owned the land and used it as a private estate overlooking Lyon. The city of Lyon bought the property in 1976 and opened it to the public.
The Villa Gillet, a brick building at the heart of the park, hosts cultural events each year, including a festival of readings and performances held in May. In summer, a festival celebrating Romani music draws visitors to the open lawns.
The park can be entered from rue Chazière at the top or from an entrance on the montée des Esses lower down the hill, making it accessible from different parts of the neighborhood. The paths slope upward through the grounds, so comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially if you plan to walk the full loop.
A belvedere was added to the park in 2013, offering a view over the rooftops of Lyon and the surrounding mountains that many visitors do not expect to find inside a neighborhood park. The grounds also include an orienteering course, a low-key feature that invites people to explore the full area at their own pace.
