Abeno Harukas

Abeno Harukas, Skyscraper in Abenosuji, Japan.

Abeno Harukas is a 300-meter tower in Abenosuji with 60 floors above ground and 4 underground levels. The structure houses a department store, office spaces, a hotel and an observation platform with floor-to-ceiling glass panels.

Construction began in 2010 and was completed in 2014 by Takenaka Corporation. The finished structure received the BCS Prize and the Good Design Award for its architectural contribution.

The observation platform draws local residents who come to watch sunsets or celebrate special occasions with a panoramic view. The shopping center in the lower floors reflects the Japanese preference for multi-story department stores where people can spend an entire day.

The upper floors offer open views across Osaka and beyond toward the horizon. Visitors will find numerous restaurants and shops spread across multiple levels inside the building.

The name comes from the old Japanese word harukasu, meaning to brighten and clear the surrounding space. This linguistic detail points to a philosophical attitude toward urban development that goes beyond mere function.
