Markthalle Neun, Indoor market and food hall in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany
Markthalle Neun is an indoor market and food hall in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district of Berlin, housed in a late 19th-century brick building with high ceilings and a large open floor plan. Inside, rows of small stalls offer fresh bread, cheese, meat, coffee, and specialty foods from many regions.
The hall opened in 1891 as one of fourteen covered markets built by the city of Berlin to supply food to its growing population. Decades later, it was taken over by supermarket chains, and by the time locals bought it back in 2010, its original purpose had long been abandoned.
Every Thursday evening, the hall fills with street food stands from many parts of the world, drawing in both locals and visitors who share tables and try unfamiliar dishes. On the third Sunday of each month, a breakfast market takes over the space, giving the morning a relaxed, communal feel.
The market is on Pücklerstraße in Kreuzberg and is easy to reach by subway or bike, since parking in the area is limited. Weekday visits tend to be calmer than weekends, when the hall draws larger crowds.
A small brewery operates inside the hall and sells beer brewed on the premises, which is rare for an indoor market of this kind. A coffee roaster also works within the same space, so the smell of freshly roasted beans often mixes with the scent of baked bread throughout the hall.
