Feuerwehrbrunnen, Public fountain at Mariannenplatz in Kreuzberg, Germany
The Feuerwehrbrunnen is a fountain on Mariannenplatz in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg featuring three bronze firefighter statues and an octagonal basin of pink Swedish granite. The sculptures stand within a spacious water basin that forms a permanent public art installation.
The original design came from architect Ludwig Hoffmann in 1902 as a tribute to firefighters who risked their lives in service. The structure was rebuilt in 1981 with a new artistic interpretation following damage from the war.
The bronze firefighters on display feature exaggerated faces and large noses, showing how artist Kurt Mühlenhaupt interpreted the subject with humor. These figures catch the eye and reflect his personal style in portraying Berlin life in a lighthearted way.
The fountain sits at the center of Mariannenplatz and is easy to reach with full wheelchair access. The square hosts community activities throughout the year, so you will find different things happening depending on the season.
Every Sunday in remembrance of the dead, local firefighters gather at the fountain to honor colleagues who have passed away. This ceremony reveals the deep connection between the monument and the firefighting community.
