Astronaut Cosmonaut, Street art mural in Kreuzberg, Germany
Astronaut Cosmonaut is a large-scale mural painted on a building wall at the intersection of Mariannenstrasse and Skalitzer Strasse. The artwork depicts a figure in a spacesuit floating against a dark background and covers a significant portion of the building's facade.
The artwork was created by French artist Victor Ash during the 2007 Backjumps urban art festival. Its creation reflects the historical competition between the United States and the Soviet Union in space exploration through visual language.
The mural takes its name from the Soviet space program and has become a landmark that shapes the neighborhood's identity as a hub for creative expression. Today, it attracts artists and visitors who use the location as a gathering point within Kreuzberg's artistic community.
The mural is located at a street corner that is easily reached on foot and situated near several subway and bus stations. The best viewing angle is from across the street, where you can take in the full scale of the work.
The original installation featured an interactive element where neon light from a nearby car dealership cast a flag shadow on the astronaut's hand at night. This created a visual illusion of movement in the figure's gesture.
