Balay Dako, Filipino restaurant in Tagaytay, Philippines
Balay Dako is a Filipino restaurant housed in a Spanish-Philippine villa with three dining rooms called Terraza, Silong, and Comedor. Each room frames views of Taal Lake through large windows and displays local architectural details throughout the space.
Chef Tony Boy Escalante founded this restaurant in a villa that blends traditional Spanish-Philippine architecture with local design elements. The project emerged from a desire to showcase classic Filipino cuisine within a space reflecting the region's cultural roots.
The name means 'Big House' in the Negrense dialect, reflecting the generous portions and family-style dining that defines Filipino homes. Visitors experience firsthand how locals gather to share meals and express hospitality through food.
The restaurant sits approximately one hour from Manila and is easily accessible by car. It opens at 10 AM on weekdays and 7 AM on weekends, with closing time at 9 PM both days, allowing visitors to dine at various times.
The restaurant specializes in native Filipino dishes like bulalo, laing, and tawilis, prepared with regional ingredients from surrounding provinces. These local specialties are rarely found elsewhere in the area and offer an authentic taste of provincial cooking.
