Very Good Falafel
Very Good Falafel is a small restaurant on Sydney Road in Brunswick focused on fresh falafel served in warm pita bread. The open kitchen grinds chickpeas daily, mixes them with onion, garlic, and herbs, then fries them until golden and serves them with tahini sauce, rotating fresh salads, and homemade lemonade made with lemon juice and mint.
The restaurant grew from a successful food truck run by Louisa Allan and Shuki Rosenboim, who originally sold falafel at farmers' markets. They opened the fixed location on Sydney Road in 2016 and quickly became a neighborhood favorite while maintaining their hands-on method of preparing chickpeas fresh each day.
Very Good Falafel takes its name from the core product, a daily staple prepared with care and tradition. The restaurant displays Lebanese and Israeli cooking culture through its open kitchen, shelves filled with Hebrew and Lebanese cookbooks, and the visible use of traditional tools like the falafel gun brought from Israel.
The restaurant sits on Sydney Road and is easily accessible by public transport with a busy tram route running past it. The small space offers window seating overlooking the busy street, but takeout is popular with most visitors, and delivery options are available for eating at home or work.
The falafel is shaped using a special gun sent from Israel by Rosenboim's family, a tool rarely seen in Australia. The restaurant also sells a cookbook with over 52 recipes that lets visitors recreate the homemade techniques and flavors at home.
