The Cold War Museum, Cold War Museum under Hotel Jalta, Wenceslas Square, Prague, Czech Republic
The museum occupies a former nuclear fallout shelter ten meters underground beneath Hotel Jalta on Wenceslas Square. The space displays rooms and objects that document how people lived and worked during this period.
The bunker was constructed in 1953 as a secret outpost and served until 1989 as a center for surveillance operations. The underground rooms were used to maintain tight control over the city.
The space displays items from the Communist era, including a recreated office with period typewriters and uniforms worn by security officers. Visitors can see how surveillance worked and what tools were used to monitor people.
Entry is through the hotel and requires walking down stairs to reach the underground level. Plan to spend enough time on your visit since guided tours cover detailed information and the history takes time to absorb.
The bunker was equipped to shelter up to 150 people and could have sustained them for two days with water, food, and air. The air filtration technology from that era is still visible and shows how seriously a nuclear threat was taken.
