Palác Luxor, Functionalist palace in New Town, Czech Republic
Palác Luxor is a concrete and glass building with eleven floors above ground and three basement levels in central Prague. The facade feels open and geometric, with large window areas that bring plenty of light inside.
Architects Bohumír Kozák and Nikola Dobrovic completed this functionalist building in 1926 during a time of major architectural change. The structure arose as Prague was rapidly modernizing and exploring new construction approaches.
The building shows how Czech architects moved away from ornate styles toward simpler, more practical designs in the years after World War I. Its straightforward form reflects the ideas that influenced many builders in Prague at that time.
The building sits in the heart of the Old Town and is easy to reach by public transportation. Visitors can explore the surrounding streets and view the architecture from the outside.
The building was originally designed as a luxury cinema, and the interior spaces still show traces of this purpose. The rooms were laid out to allow large crowds to flow smoothly through them.
