Rotem, Bik'at HaYarden, Settlement and restaurant in Jordan Valley, West Bank.
Rotem, also known as Bik'at HaYarden, is an Israeli settlement with a restaurant in the northern Jordan Valley, in the West Bank. The village includes residential areas and farmland spread across a low-lying, dry valley landscape.
The settlement began as a military outpost in 1983 and was gradually turned into a permanent residential place. Around 2001, the community took its current shape as families settled there for good.
Rotem brings together residents from different religious backgrounds, and this mix is visible in the daily life of the community. Orthodox and secular families share the same small village, which gives the place a particular rhythm that visitors can observe.
The village sits in one of the hottest and driest parts of the West Bank, so coming prepared for intense heat is essential. Getting there requires some local knowledge, as the place is in a remote and sensitive area.
The Technion institute developed water and irrigation techniques specifically for this settlement to cope with the extreme dryness of the Jordan Valley. Thanks to these methods, farming is possible in a place that would otherwise be too harsh for crops.
